Gas golf carts, simply put, run on gasoline.  The older gas golf carts required you to mix the gasoline and oil because they were equipped with 2 cycle engines, but todays gas powered golf carts come with 4 cycle gas engines making the mixing of the gas and oil automatic.  One of the biggest negatives of owning a gas golf cart is the exhaust fumes.  Many people just don't like the smell.  This is especially true if you are planning to make a 4 passenger golf cart by adding a rear seat kit.  The people riding on the back of the golf cart have to breathe the fumes and sometimes get the smell on thier clothing.  One of the advantages of a gas golf cart is you can run it all day and when it runs out of gas you just fill it up and you can keep on going. 

The other option you have when choosing a used golf cart is to buy a used electric golf cart.  The older electric powered golf carts prior to the mid 90's were not very efficient with the battery power and therefor had a shorter runtime than the more recent golf carts.  When looking at buying an electric powered golf cart it is important to choose the newest you can afford so you can take advantage of the latest technologies.  The newer models offer its owner a substantially longer range on each charge.

Used electric golf carts, unlike the gas golf carts, tend to be more user friendly.  They are much quieter in thier operation allowing you and your guest to have a conversation while riding on the used golf carts.  Also, there are not any fumes coming from the back of the golf cart and this makes for a more pleasant experience for your passengers.  Whether you choose a 36 volt or 48 volt system the batteries will usually last about 4 to 6 years before needing to be replaced, if maintaned properly.  A new set of batteries are a little pricey, but in the long run many people find this to be a cheaper option than always having to buy gasoline and having to change the oil & filters all the time.
